The Kangaroo Shots

We're finally getting around to the kangaroo and koala photos I promised earlier. Last Saturday I visited the Australian Reptile Park on a tour organized by the university. I didn't expect much for the tour since for the past two weeks, it has rained almost every day. Luckily, Saturday was an exception and we had a great day in sunshine.

A place to call home

I've already been in Australia for two weeks but haven't been able to post as many photos I thought I would. The main reason for this has been the lack of a good public wireless internet access that could be used for uploading images. This weekend though I moved out of the hostel into a more permanent accommodation and to a decent wireless, and I intend to catch up on the photos quite soon.

Arriving in Australia

Roughly 40 hours since leaving my home in Oulu (left), I finally made it to the hostel in Newcastle (right). I had two 10 hour long flights, from Helsinki to Tokyo and from Tokyo to Sydney. I hadn't ever flown before, so at least it was something new to experience.

Another nail in the coffin

So, today I turned 23. To celebrate, I bought myself a present, Sony DSC-H3. It takes rather good photos (says an 101-class amateur-level beginner photographer newbie like me) for the price, except the lack of an uncompressed format is a definite minus. Nevertheless, I hope to be a diligent tourist and take lots of photos during my half-year stay in Australia, so expect to see some of them here.

I don't get presents too often any more, since anything useful I'd really want would cost more than a few dozen euros. But yesterday I got a very nice gift from the company that shows that a good present doesn't necessarily need to be measured by its material value.

Setting Up

While preparing my trip abroad, I came to the conclusion that I need a better way to manage photo galleries on my webpage. I've had the thought of updating my PHP/MySQL -system for a while to add new features (RSS for example) and better maintainability, but writing yet another website is not really what I want to spend my time with. So I'm setting up this CMS software to serve as a photo gallery, file dump and a project CV. Now, I just need to take some time to learn how this thing works.
